New Publication from the AIDA Network Behçet’s Disease Registry

The study explores an important question for patients and clinicians: which individuals who initially show only skin and mucosal symptoms of Behçet’s disease (such as mouth or genital ulcers, or skin lesions) are more likely to develop major organ involvement later on?
The research analyzed 328 patients who had mucocutaneous symptoms at the onset of the disease. Over time, 1 in 4 patients developed involvement of major organs such as the eyes, blood vessels, nervous system, or gastrointestinal tract. The study found that certain combinations of symptoms at the beginning—particularly major oral ulcers, alone or together with genital ulcers or pseudofolliculitis, as well as having a family history of Behçet’s disease—were associated with a higher risk of more severe organ involvement later.
These findings may help doctors identify earlier those patients who could benefit from closer monitoring or tailored treatment strategies, improving long-term outcomes.
