Biotechnological Agents in TRAPS: New Publication in Frontiers in Medicine
A retrospective study aimed at assessing the role of biotechnological agents in patients with TRAPS has been published based on “real-life” experience . This is a new result of the AIDA network, which has been capable of collecting data from 44 TRAPS patients (55 treatment courses) treated with anti-IL-1, anti-IL-6 and anti-TNF agents in 16 referring centres. Biotechnological agents have proven to induce disease control in the vast majority of cases, with severity, frequency and length of inflammatory attacks significantly reduced disregarding the age at disease onset, the penetrance of mutations and the line of biotechnological agents employed. Similarly, the laboratory markers and the clinimetric scores significantly reduced as soon as the first follow-up assessment. In parallel, patients benefited from a significant corticosteroid sparing effect. Noteworthy, patients with proteinuria at the start of treatment showed a significant reduction of this laboratory finding during the study period. The safety profile was excellent with most adverse events being not severe and not inducing treatment withdrawal. This study confirms in a real-life context the results obtained from clinical trials and corroborates previous works based on a lower number of patients.
